Guide to adapting your rescued dog to a new home

Dear adoptive parents,

I will be moving in with you soon, and although I am excited, I am also feeling insecure. Please be patient and help me settle into my new home.

VIDEO in German

Before my arrival:

✔️ Prepare all the formalities: dog tax, insurance, dog tag with phone number, TASSO registration.
✔️ Make your home safe: remove exposed wires, toxic plants, dangerous foods, and check fences.
✔️ Make sure I have the necessary equipment: adjustable collar, safety harness, double leash, quiet place of refuge.

The first hours:

✔️ When you pick me up, use a harness and a double leash for my safety.
✔️ Transport me safely, preferably in the trunk or back seat, properly secured.
✔️ Upon arrival, take me straight home, without stops.
✔️ Give me time to explore the house in peace and don't overwhelm me with too many people.

The first weeks:

✔️ Avoid numerous visitors and forced encounters with other dogs.
✔️ Establish a clear daily routine, with short walks and repetitive routes.
✔️ Be patient with training and possible accidents.
✔️ Gradually introduce the new food and observe my reactions.
✔️ Give me stability, clear rules, and don't let me run free without a leash.

My long-term safety:

✔️ Do not leave doors and windows open.
✔️ If they run away, stay where you are and contact search services.
✔️ Notify authorities and distribute posters and online announcements.

We sincerely thank Sylvia Kaufmann (Germany) and her collaborators for creating this valuable material, which helps rescued dogs have an easier transition to a new life! ❤️🐾
